About London Leicester Square

Leicester Square is one of the busiest spots in London. It is located in the West End area of Central London, and it lies within an area bound by Charing Cross Road, to the east, Whitcomb Street, to the west, Lisle Street, to the north and Orange Street, to the south. It was named after Robert Sidney, 2nd Earl of Leicester, an English aristocrat and diplomat, who purchased four acres, in St. Martin's Field in 1630, fact which marked the beginning of the Square's creation. By the 19th century, Leicester Square became known as an entertainment venue, later, several hotels appearing around the square, making it popular and drawing more visitors to London, as the years gone by.

In time, Leicester Square grew more and more in popularity, today, being recognized as one of London's "not to be missed" areas. It is also the center of London's cinema land, one of the signs marking the Square bearing the legend "Theatreland". Some of the Square's most popular "residents" include the Bust of Hogarth, The Shakespeare fountain and statue and Tom Cruise's handprints, also of interest being the Square's recent addition, the statue of film star and director, Charlie Chaplin.

However, Leicester Square is only a small "piece" of London's huge "puzzle" of attractions. As a leading global city, London has strengths in the arts, education, entertainment, commerce, fashion, healthcare, finance, media, research and development, professional services, tourism and transport, all contributing to its prominence.
